Franchesca, founder of Loose Cannon, discovered that constructing clothes was a creative outlet and a way for her to escape the stress and weight of worldly and otherworldly worries. Most forms of art appeal to Fran and she likes to incorporate various techniques/ideas to build and bring a design to life. Franchesca grew up in RSA, studied fashion design at LISOF, made some custom gowns, then pivoted to interesting places and unfathomable situations. After moving to Kelowna and after years of searching for purpose, she circled back to fashion and can’t imagine life without it. Loose Cannon is about freedom, expression and art.
PREVIOUS COLLECTIONS
What inspired your journey into fashion design and the creation of your brand?
I had a desire to create art and decided to do it on a manikin. I did it for myself and created things I loved and wanted to see and feel and experience through this form of design. This has been the most fulfilling journey.
How would you describe your brand's identity or design philosophy?
The brand ‘identity’ might be a little rebellious and edgy. It will likely represent freedom of expressing inner needs and desires. I suspect that future designs will take form because of deep feelings and various subject matter, always changing and the styles…probably never mainstream.
What inspired this collection?
I was inspired by the early grunge scene and rock n’ roll. Even though some designs are delicate, they are supposed to give the wearer confidence to walk on stage and crush it! be forceful, radical, exceptional and stellar.
Are there any signature pieces, materials, techniques, or craftsmanship you would like to highlight?
For some of the garments I constructed patterns while others were just draped and manipulated. Some outfits include hand made pottery pieces or chain and beads and some components were used from thrifted garments that were rearranged to become centerpieces in new designs. Strapping was also incorporated into some of the designs, but in a feminine or soft way.
What story or message does this collection tell?
It tells a story of a well-worn life of restraint and liberation. We should get the feeling that the person walking down the runway is elated, free and ready to take on the world (even though they had a long night).
