The designer SHINO is self-taught in creating visually appealing costumes influenced by the Japanese culture of Visual Kei bands.
He loves the Crow Tribe and live music clubs, and has made great strides as a designer specializing in stage costumes.
He launched his own collection under his own name at this year's Fashion Week.
This collection expresses one designer's view of the world, opening the door to the self as if reaching for the other side of a mirror.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer?
I was strongly influenced by Japan’s Visual Kei culture and developed an interest in stage costumes through live music. After some vocational training, I continued studying costume design independently and eventually specialized in creating stagewear.
How would you describe your design style?
My designs are theatrical and visually expressive, with strong influences from Visual Kei, fetish and gothic aesthetics, and medieval Europe. I focus on creating striking stage costumes that bring out each artist’s unique character.
What can people expect from your Vancouver Fashion Week collection?
The SS24 presentation introduced SHINO’s distinctive approach to costume design on an international runway. Inspired by Japanese Visual Kei culture, the collection featured dramatic and highly expressive looks that emphasized strong visual impact.
How does Visual Kei culture influence your approach to costume design?
Visual Kei places strong emphasis on artistic fashion, makeup, and visual expression. SHINO brings this influence into stage costumes through dramatic styling and distinctive designs intended to strengthen each performer’s individual presence.
How does working with artists influence the way you develop new designs?
Meeting an exciting artist can become the starting point for my creative process. Ideas for designs and colours develop around the person, with each custom costume created to enhance the artist’s unique appeal.
