What inspired you to become a fashion designer?
Ryunosuke Murata studied fashion at Vantan Design Institute before gaining experience in luxury fashion and as a corporate designer. His desire to create original fashion and pursue authentic craftsmanship eventually led him to establish Ryunosuke TOKYO in 2019.
How would you describe your design style?
The brand combines Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary luxury tailoring, focusing on high quality materials, construction, and distinctive design. Its aesthetic, described as “Vintedge Craft Modern,” blends classic elegance with a sharper modern sensibility.
What can people expect from your Vancouver Fashion Week collection?
The VFW presentation featured 12 looks inspired by the elegance of the 1920s and The Great Gatsby. Tailored jackets, shirts, ties, cummerbunds, and suspenders brought the brand’s modern interpretation of classic menswear to the runway.
How is Nishijin weaving incorporated into your designs?
Traditional Nishijin textiles are incorporated into contemporary tailoring, particularly the brand’s signature jackets. Their intricate weaving and original patterns bring Japanese craftsmanship into a modern luxury context while preserving the textile tradition.
Why is preserving traditional Japanese craftsmanship important to Ryunosuke TOKYO?
Murata became interested in traditional crafts after encountering Ise Katagami as a student and witnessing artisans’ detailed work firsthand. This experience inspired him to use fashion to introduce and preserve Japanese craftsmanship for future generations.
