Nathalie Ravaoary is a Vancouver-based fashion designer originally from Madagascar

whose work explores the emotional and psychological landscapes that shape human

identity. Through her debut collection, ‘Unchained’, she blends fashion and art to

create a powerful narrative of healing, resilience, and self-liberation.

Deeply inspired by personal experiences and the lasting imprint of memory, Nathalie’s

designs reflect the invisible weight we carry throughout life. Layers of fabric symbolize the protective barriers we construct over time—shields that both conceal and safeguard our vulnerabilities. Organic, branch-like textures evoke the way trauma can take root and grow within us when left unaddressed, subtly influencing our sense of self. Striking red accents punctuate her work, representing the raw intensity and courage required to confront the past and reclaim one’s story.

For Nathalie, design is more than aesthetics; it is a deeply introspective and transformative process. Her work embodies the delicate balance between fragility and strength, illustrating how adversity can both burden and shape resilience. Each piece in Unchained tells a story of survival and evolution, emphasizing that healing is not linear, but a continuous journey of rediscovery and empowerment. Drawing from her multicultural background and lived experiences, Nathalie uses fashion as a medium for expression, reflection, and connection.

Her work invites audiences to engage with their own narratives, encouraging a deeper understanding of vulnerability, growth, and the enduring power of transformation.

PREVIOUS  COLLECTIONS

What inspired you to become a fashion designer?

I grew up in Madagascar and originally worked in tourism, but I was always drawn to art and creativity. I began sewing my own clothes on my sister's sewing machine, and what started as curiosity gradually became a passion that led me to study tailoring, launch my brand, and pursue fashion as a career.

How would you describe your design style?

My aesthetic sits between raw emotion and refined structure. I create sculptural yet wearable garments inspired by storytelling, identity, and self-expression, often with an avant-garde approach.

What can people expect from your latest collection?

Unchained explores the emotional and physical weight we carry throughout life. Through layered fabrics, structured silhouettes, contrasting textures, and bold red accents, the collection tells a story of trauma, resilience, healing, and liberation.

Why did you choose "Unchained" as the theme of your debut collection?

Unchained represents breaking free from the emotional burdens we carry. I wanted to express the journey from trauma to healing and remind people that resilience grows through confronting, not hiding, our experiences.

Why do layered fabrics and branch-like textures appear throughout your designs?

The layered fabrics symbolize the protective barriers we build over time, while the branch-like textures represent how unresolved trauma can quietly grow within us. These details help transform emotions into visual storytelling.
