An Identity Crisis is described as a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person’s sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society. This season designer Amy Herndon explores her own identity and recent struggles with mental health through a comprehensive analysis of what identity means.
SS20 can be viewed as an intensive analysis and exploration of different ways of looking at one’s self to achieve personal commitment. Contrasting colours and styles are combined to represent the change and evolution of identity as it shifts and grows throughout life as people confront new challenges and experiences. Identity is dynamic, constantly changing and we utilize clothing to communicate the way we wish to be seen.
Fingerprint and DNA marker graphics are used to represent the grounded aspects of identity, the biological aspects we don’t get to decide. Mint green and vibrant red tones are expressive of changing internal temperature, similar to a mood ring. An array of styles can be seen mixed together used convey personality experimentation, a critical part of identity achievement. Crisp poplin gathered and draped to create irregular shapes and textures, combined with detailed outerwear, soft flowing crepe and bold accessories.
