UNSERTEN is a Tokyo-based, avant-garde elegant menswear fashion brand founded in 2020.
UNSERTEN is inspired by the feeling of uncertainty. People desire certainty through their lives but it is, now more than ever, a fact that we live in a rapidly changing world full of uncertainties. Yet it is often those uncertainties that are key to opening new possibilities and making the world a more diverse place.
UNSERTEN consists of an international team of designers from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities, each having their distinct impact on our designs and philosophy. Is through this collaboration that we hope to convey our vision of an inclusive, international and bright future, no matter what uncertainties we might face.

PREVIOUS COLLECTIONS
What inspired you to create UNSERTEN?
The COVID-19 pandemic made us rethink our rapidly changing world and the uncertainty surrounding it. Our team had previously worked together as an artist group, and we created UNSERTEN as a way to express our perspective through fashion.
How would you describe your design style?
We combine an avant-garde approach with elegant menswear and unisex design. Our international backgrounds bring together ideas of East and West and old and new, while human emotion and different artistic influences continue to shape our work.
What can people expect from your Vancouver Fashion Week collection?
The FW23 collection, “ARE BURE BOKE,” draws inspiration from Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama’s rough, shaky, and blurred photographic style. The work of Japanese artist KUROSUZUME also contributed to the collection’s creative direction.
How does your international design team shape the creative process?
We come together at our art salon in Tokyo to discuss art, history, music, accessories, and other ideas for each season. After developing a concept, we brainstorm together before our lead designer transforms those ideas into samples.
How did Japanese photography influence the “ARE BURE BOKE” collection?
The collection takes its name from three Japanese words meaning rough, shaky, and blurred, terms associated with Daido Moriyama’s photographic style. Photography and performance art by Japanese artist KUROSUZUME provided another source of inspiration.
