What inspired you to become a fashion designer?
Stephanie discovered fashion design after taking sewing classes at the Pacific Design Academy and quickly developed a passion for the craft. She later studied fashion design full time and launched Smouldy after graduating in 2022.
How would you describe your design style?
Her designs revisit classic silhouettes through a youthful and eye catching perspective. Influenced by 20th century music and art, the brand combines tailoring and vintage references with a strong commitment to slow and sustainable fashion.
What can people expect from your Vancouver Fashion Week collection?
The FW24 collection brings vintage influences from the 1960s and 1980s into a contemporary context. Playful styling and classic references are combined with repurposed materials to introduce these aesthetics to a new generation.
How are leftover materials from the marine textile industry incorporated into the collection?
Scrap materials from the marine textile industry are repurposed instead of being discarded. Vinyl and faux leather are incorporated through patchwork, giving existing materials a new purpose while supporting the brand’s focus on reducing waste.
How do music and art from past decades influence your designs?
Music and art from the 20th century are major sources of inspiration, with different eras helping shape each collection. These influences allow Stephanie to revisit classic styles while giving them a fresh perspective for younger generations.
