Educated at the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver, Emma Ireland Shepherd has built a career that combines fashion design, technical development, and education. Alongside her work within the fashion industry and as an instructor at VCAD and technical developer for the brand Aisle, Emma continues to develop her independent label, Emma Ireland Designs. Incorporated in 2019, the brand is an outlet for creative self-expression grounded in strong technical design, craftsmanship, and a distinctly female perspective.

The Emma Ireland Designs aesthetic is best described as hyper-femininity presented with unapologetic confidence. The brand embraces the visual language of girlhood and traditionally feminine craft, using colour, texture, embellishment, and playful details to explore the realities of womanhood. Taking a girly inspiration and using it to ignite a sense of liberation, Emma Ireland Designs is for the rage-filled feminist who still wants to wear the pretty dress. The clothing celebrates femininity not as something passive or performed for others, but as something powerful, complex, and worthy of taking up space.

Following “Love Letter to Girlhood”, Emma’s latest collection, “The Feminine Gaze”, expands upon the brand’s exploration of femininity, this time of that girl all grown up. The collection examines the contradictions inherent in the woman’s experience: softness and anger, beauty and discomfort, vulnerability and defiance. Through playful craftsmanship and colourful designs, “The Feminine Gaze” asks what fashion can look like when women are no longer dressing to be looked at, but instead creating, dressing, and expressing themselves for one another and for themselves.

What inspired Emma Ireland Shepherd to become a fashion designer?

Emma began sewing and designing at a young age, eventually turning that interest into formal training and a career spanning several sides of the fashion industry. Emma Ireland Designs gives her a place to step outside the practical demands of commercial design and make clothing that is personal, experimental, and entirely her own.

How would you describe Emma Ireland Designs’ design style?

Emma Ireland Designs is defined by hyper-femininity presented with unapologetic confidence. The collections are colourful, highly detailed, and distinctly female in perspective, reflecting Shepherd’s belief that clothing should be fun and expressive.

What can people expect from the SS27 collection?

The Feminine Gaze uses colour, styling, and highly considered details to create an immediate sense of joy and visual excess. Words and references are also hidden throughout the garments, offering another layer for audiences who look closer.

What inspired The Feminine Gaze collection?

After looking back at childhood in A Love Letter to Girlhood, Shepherd wanted to explore what happens to that unapologetic girl as she grows up. The Feminine Gaze developed from questions about how women learn to observe themselves, how much of that perspective comes from outside expectations, and what might remain if those expectations were removed.

How does Emma Ireland Designs approach sustainability?

Emma Ireland Designs approaches sustainability through small-scale, intentional production rather than volume. Garments are one-of-a-kind samples made in-house, with an emphasis on careful construction and handwork, while existing materials, deadstock, remnants, and repurposed components are used when possible.
