Get to Know Choiboko

Korean brand, Choiboko is full of beautifully designed pieces that are a great mix of colour and structure, and this September they will be showcasing their innovative work at Vancouver Fashion Week. The brand’s Fall/Winter 2017 Daegu collection has many wearable, sophisticated designs that plenty of people would want to have in their own wardrobe. Creator, and original designer, Bok Ho Choi has been in the fashion industry since graduating from design school in 1973. Now with over 40 years of experience under his belt, he is still an important part of Choiboko and the Korean fashion industry. To get to know Bok Ho Choi before viewing his pieces at the Vancouver Fashion Week, we asked him a few questions.

VFW: What is your favourite part of being a designer?

Choiboko: I like to consider the social role of fashion in a philosophical point of view, with an interest in human beings and nature. My inspirations have always come from surroundings in daily life, such as nature and social life. From my first debut work, called ‘Accusation Costume,’ in 1973, I have always tried to incorporate a message on social issues such as environmental problems, and the Daegu subway fire in 2003, in Korea.

Lee Yu Jung, designer and owner of the Korean brand LBYL, will be showcasing at Vancouver Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2018 season! Before seeing her unique and classic ready-to-wear designs at this September’s showcase, we got to ask her a few questions.

VFW: What is your favourite thing to do when you are not working?

Lee: Actually, being a designer is a job that I can’t escape from, except for when going to bed, because to me it is always the most exciting thing to imagine new designs. What I like, except for working, is traveling, watching movies and reading a book! But while I do these things, I am not apart from my designs.

VFW: What is your favourite part of being a designer?

Lee: Creating something new is always an exciting part that flutters my heart. Being able to take things from my imagination, create them, and show them in the real world is a great part too! So is seeing the moment when an idea that I have been thinking of comes into the world. That is the absolute number one reason that I can’t quit this job.

VFW: What makes you different from similar brands/designs?

Lee: I don’t know what brands are similar to my brand. I always put some story in the clothes that I design. What I feel when I design is what I feel in the memories of my childhood. I’ve always been dreaming, reading fairy tale books and realizing that playing stories with my brothers is where I’d get vicarious satisfaction equal to the characters. I have also heard that my clothes are lovely and part of a girl’s dream.
