INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER COMPETITIONS

Vancouver Fashion Week is proud to present Vancouver’s first International Fashion Design Competition. Here, we bring the brightest in young emerging talent from across the globe. Some of the most original and creative designers will compete during this extraordinary event. These stylists hold the future of fashion design in their hands, and our goal is to help them to further their careers in this competition.

Our Vision is to highlight the multitude of diverse cultures that exist within the confines of Vancouver—the fashion capital of the West Coast.

Our Focus is on embracing the creativity, expression and the diversity of international fashion design. This competition is looking for young talent with the potential that can take fashion design to the next level.

First Annual International Design Competition

Vancouver Fashion Week presented the first of its kind—the Vancouver International Fashion Design Competition—featuring Spring/Summer 2010 Collections. With 22 contestants gathered from all over the world, including Ireland, Israel, Germany, the USA, as well as local Vancouverites, this was bound to be an exciting edition of the event—and indeed it was!

The show began with daywear, blending into eveningwear. To wrap up the competition, it finished by featuring the Avant-garde selection. Each emerging designer showcased three (3) of their Spring/Summer 2010 looks in competition for the grand prize of $1000 and a photo spread featured in the Vancouver View Magazine. Judging was provided by our panel, which consisted of the following individuals:

Virginia Leeming – A former fashion and Beauty Editor at the Vancouver Sun.
Michaela Stapf – A clothing manufacturer with over 20 years experience of Fashion under her belt.
Deanna Apalowski – A local Vancouver stylist. You can find her latest work featured in TLC Magazine.

Judges Results:

Grand Prize Winner:
• Tanya Min Jee Ellis (Seattle, WA)

1st Runner-up:
• Philip Kiegland (Hannover, Germany)

2nd Runner-up:
• Wilber Tellez (Studying in Vancouver, but from Mexico)

Thank you to all of our contestants, as well as to all of our judges who provided their expertise in determining VFW’s first finalist of our first Vancouver International Fashion Design Competition. We also appreciate all of those who voted in helping determine our winners of the People’s Choice Award. Look for them next season as they showcase their Fall 2010 collection during our Spring Vancouver Fashion Week event, taking place from April 7th to April 11th.
